The Colorado Department of Transportation announced on April 9 that a resurfacing project will start Tuesday, April 14, along US Highway 50 in Delta County. The work will cover a nine-mile stretch from three miles north of Delta at Mile Point 68.5 to the intersection with B Road at Mile Point 77. The downtown core of the City of Delta, between Mile Points 70.90 and 72, will not be affected by this phase.

This project is significant for local transportation as it aims to improve road conditions and safety features along an important route. Additional planned improvements include guardrail replacement, reconstruction of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ramps, and minor upgrades on bridges over the Gunnison River. The work is expected to continue until mid-July.

Several work zones will operate at once throughout the corridor. Resurfacing efforts are set to begin on the south end of Delta. Sidewalk and ADA ramp removal and preparation are scheduled for locations such as Wide Acres Park, the entrance to the CDOT yard, four sites on 1525 Road, two each on both 1560 Road and Ute Street, as well as at the City Market entrance.

United Companies from Grand Junction has been contracted for this $7.5 million project. Daytime construction hours are set from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. Traffic in either direction may be reduced intermittently to one lane with up to fifteen-minute delays managed by flaggers; speed limits in work zones will be lowered to forty miles per hour.

According to the official website, the Colorado Department of Transportation oversees transportation infrastructure across Colorado and builds and maintains interstates, U.S., and state highways while supporting aviation and transit grants statewide.
Shoshana Lew serves as executive director for CDOT according to its official website. The agency’s mission includes delivering integrated multi-modal solutions that safely move people and goods while enhancing quality of life in Colorado.
