Vega Reederei has selected Inmarsat Maritime’s NexusWave connectivity solution for its new fleet of 89-metre, 3,800-deadweight-tonne short-sea general cargo vessels. The ships, which are scheduled for delivery by July 2026, feature an innovative hull and propeller design aimed at improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. There are also plans to upgrade the vessels in the future with all-electric operations and Conoship’s wind-assisted propulsion system, eConowind.
NexusWave is a managed bonded network service that combines GX Ka-band, LEO, LTE, and L-band networks. It is designed to provide seamless “office-like” and “home-like” connectivity on board, with unlimited data usage and always-on secure connections. This technology will support the advanced operating technology (OT) and sophisticated electrical systems installed on Vega’s newbuild ships.
Leon Constantin von Plato, Head of the technical department at Vega Reederei, said: “Our innovative new fleet of diesel-electric coasters reflects our commitment to modernising operations for optimum efficiency and environmental performance. Having a connectivity solution that keeps pace with our innovative approach, offering robust cyber-security, unlimited data, and resilience, will support us in achieving these goals.”
Christian Fölster, Sales Manager at Inmarsat Maritime, added: “Vega’s forward-thinking approach positions them perfectly as early adopters of NexusWave, a solution designed to address today’s needs while anticipating evolving requirements of our customers. We’ve seen strong early interest in the solution, and we’re excited to showcase what it can deliver.”
The agreement with Vega follows similar deals Inmarsat recently signed with Auerbach Marine and Krey Schiffahrt GmbH for NexusWave deployment. Inmarsat has announced ongoing service improvements for NexusWave users; upcoming enhancements will use the next-generation ViaSat-3 Ka-band network to provide greater capacity and higher speeds.
Viasat completed its acquisition of Inmarsat in May 2023. The combined company now operates from offices in 24 countries worldwide and aims to deliver reliable communications services across land, air, sea—and space—while focusing on sustainability.
