Viasat has been awarded a contract by the U.S. Space Force (USSF) to advance the Protected Tactical SATCOM-Global (PTS-G) program. Under this initial contract, Viasat’s Space and Mission Systems team, part of its Defense and Advanced Technologies segment, will develop a design for a dual-band X/Ka-band satellite and anchor station architecture. The work will include tracking, telemetry, and command (TT&C), as well as satellite and network operations and cybersecurity requirements.

The design phase, known as DO1, will last seven months and will conclude with a technical design review and demonstration. The proposed geostationary (GEO) satellite from Viasat is designed to be compact and efficient, aiming to improve end-user speeds and deliver resilient performance.

This technology is intended to provide secure and reliable communications for evolving missions of the USSF and the U.S. Department of War (DoW). The PTS-G program supports the USSF’s goal of deploying maneuverable GEO satellites to increase the resilience and flexibility of military communications. The contract also positions Viasat as a potential end-to-end satellite manufacturer for the USSF.

John Reeves, Vice President of Space and Mission Systems at Viasat Government, stated: “Viasat is honored to be selected by the U.S. Space Force for the PTS-G program. This contract underscores our proven track record in designing and delivering secure, resilient, and high-performance satellite communication solutions. We believe our dual-band X/Ka-band design, combined with Viasat’s extensive understanding of capacity economics, maneuverable GEO architectures, and heritage of delivering secure communication solutions to DoW users, will provide critical capabilities to enable global connectivity and enhance warfighters’ situational awareness and operational effectiveness to meet emerging threats. We are excited to contribute to this transformative program and support the Department of War in achieving its strategic objectives.”

The PTS-G program has an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) ceiling value of $4 billion for all potential awardees. The initiative aims to strengthen the security and performance of military satellite communications by incorporating advanced commercial technologies to create a more resilient and agile network.
